New invention from New Zealand

Have you ever broken your arm or know of someone who has?

Read this New Zealand Herald article to see how the cast is changing.

Watch this television clip to learn more about the cast design.

See if you can find any articles about any new inventions. We would love you to share them!

Life Education

We had another exciting trip to the Life Education truck today.

Lynn and Harold had some great things to say....

THE COMPANY WE KEEP REFLECTS-AND HELPS DETERMINE THE-THE KIND OF PEOPLE WE BECOME.

How do we choose good friends?

They should...

  • Be someone we can count on
  • Be motivated
  • Be someone who teaches us new things
  • Behave in a socially acceptable way
  • Have the same values we have
  • Not have destructive habits
Remember...Bullying is when someone repeatedly does or says things to have power over another person.

If you are being bullied what can you do?
Tell them to stop
Use our WITs:
Walk away
Ignore
Tell an adult

Do you know someone who is being bullied?
SAVE them:
Say - Try and stop the bully - we don't do that, we don't talk like that....
Adult Help
Volunteer Solutions - come and join our game.
* End it

We learnt that disagreements are okay but it is important how you deal with them. We don't scream and shout but we could use some of these strategies.

It's okay to disagree but....
* The best rule is to keep cool.
* Get it right without a fight.
* Give and take and negotiate
* Short fuses are not excuses.

Take a STAND
Stop and calm down
Take turns to talk about how we're feeling.
Alternatives what are they
Narrow down the choices of what we can do
Decide on the best choice.

Thank you Mr Riley

This afternoon, Mr Riley came in to speak to Year 4 about the 'telephone'. We were able to answer some of our wonderings.

Mr Riley's Fantastic Telephone Presentation

He has also agreed to be an expert for this inquiry so we can email him some of our other questions.

Thank you Mr Riley!

Ring! Ring! Ring! Ring!

The Key Concepts for our current inquiry into How the World Works are:

CHANGE-How is it changing?
FUNCTION-How does it work?

This afternoon we used the 'telephone' invention as a main focus for developing our questions.

CHANGE
"How has the telephone changed over time?"

"How has the weight of the telephone changed?"

"Why did the telephone change over time?"

"How has the size of the telephone changed?"

FUNCTION
"How does the telephone work?"

"What pieces are inside a telephone?"

"How does a mobile phone track another phone?"

"How does a mobile phone send messages and mail?"

To help us answer these questions we used our brain, books and the internet.
We are hoping some experts can help us too!

Some helpful websites were:

Simple Machines

Today we learnt about the components of a simple machine. We now know about levers, wheels and axles, pulleys, inclined planes, screws and wedges.

Simple Machine Powerpoint

Make me a genuis-Simple Machine video clip

I would like you to have another look at the power point presentation and video this week.

We will begin to make connections using the invention photos you shared as part of your home learning last week and discuss what simple machine components you can find in each of the photos.

Come on 4LOJ!

For the Junior School Father and Daughter Breakfast - the girls are now able to donate cans of ‘wet’ pet food (especially for kittens as this is the current need) – for the SPCA.

Collection bins have been set up in the Junior School Reception area and our classrooms, they will be there all week.

Girls can also donate pet-food on the morning of the event too!
